A glorious sunny day on the Thames. A gusty force 3 straight up the river and some very good bacon sandwiches.

Visitors from Fishers Green, Frensham and Royal Lymington competed with the home boats for the Munster Cup,  (one of the most prestigious Cadet trophies with many famous previous winners). Points also going towards the Ian Craig Series.

Alex Corby & Rob Keen won the event with Jack Hardie & Megan Ferguson second and Henry Marsh & Fredrick Collins third.

Fishers Green Sailing Club Cadet Open 19th May 2012

The lake at Fishers Green SC in the Lee Valley Regional Park regularly provides some shifty conditions to test the skills of our young Cadet sailors and provides an interesting contrast to the tidal conditions found at some of the coastal venues.

With breakfasts, healthy “home-cooked” lunches and refreshments available to purchase, as well as a free “sailors tea” for all, a warm Fishers Green welcome awaits competitors and parents alike.

Briefing is at 10:00hrs and the first race is planned for 10:30hrs start.

Entry fee is £15 per boat and will be accepted on the day.

Gold &Silver Fleets
Bonze Fleet

On behalf of Squadron 66 at Parkstone YC, I would like to thank all who attended the Clemenson Nautilus Trophy Event held over the weekend 5th/6th May. The racing and fleet management were excellent and the shoreside support teams did a sterling job of launching, and retrieval, in double-quick time. It was great to see so many Cadets in Poole Harbour – a tremendous advert for the class and a credit to all involved.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you about our Open Meeting on 8th/9th September when you can do it all over again. The event is also a Selector for the Junior Development Squad. You will be pleased to learn that sailing will be over "neap tides" and sunshine has been booked for the occasion.

Regards,

Duncan Glen

(Squadron 66 Fleet Captain)

Great Turnout at Stone Training Day for New Sailors - 18 Cadets and gorgeous sunshine

The first Cadet training session of 2012 held on Saturday had 18 eager children arrived at the club keen to get sailing in the 2012 sailing season at Stone.

We had 7 helms aged between 10 and 13. Most of them had never helmed a Cadet and this was coupled with 2 experienced and 8 inexperienced crew. 2 cadets took part in the Laser 4.7 training with Frankie and Georgia. The remaining 16 took part in the Cadet dinghy sailing with Duncan.

The weather couldn’t have been kinder to us it was gorgeous sunshine with a steady force 2. Most of the children looked like they had been helming for years. It was a great start for our training at the club and hopefully these numbers at training will continue to rise through the season. With an early Cadet week this year in June (6-9th) these children will be racing with the rest before we know it.

New and improved Cadet Training Scheme for 2012/13

In a nutshell all open training and Squad events will be held at the same place and time - each group on the same water on the same day with their respective coaches. This includes the replacement squad for the RYA Zone Squad and the continuing RYA National Junior Squad. This means-

  • More boats will be able to get together for better training in specific areas such as race starts.
  • Catch up with your friends in other squads.
  • Less travel issues if you have more than one sailor in your family.
  • Greater turnout at your local club as all the travellers will be back together more often.

PS Squad Jackets will be available.  Watch this space!

The National Junior Squad were as always ably led by Adam Bowers and Katrina Brewer and the National Squad with Michael Macnamara and Sam Brearey.

The weekend produced some excellent training with a decent force 4 on the Saturday to a light and shifty but technical breeze on Sunday. Both squads had plenty of "on the water" time and enjoyed some very close and competitve racing.

National Squad Training - Thorpe Bay YC

The Cadet Class National Squad enjoyed a great weekend's training at Thorpe Bay. The sun was ordered and duly arrived. The wind was almost late but arrived just in time to deliver some technical tide and current training.

As ever, the weekend's exercises were led and superbly delivered by Michael Macnamara who was very ably assisted by recent Fireball World Champion crew; Sam Brearey, who did some awesome 1 to 1 coaching with the sailors. Not one of the squad went away having not learned something new!

Many thanks to Steve Corby, John Wilson and Mike Lloyd for kindly bringing their ribs to support the training.

What did you do this weekend?

We had a blast!..

RYA Volvo Dinghy Show

The Cadet Class had a larger than usual presence at this year's dinghy show. With the Jack Holt Centenary display the Cadet played an important role. We had the recently built "Zest" on the main stand showing off the class along with DVD's of the training and boat archives where past Cadet sailors could look up their old boat. On the RYA Volvo youth stand we had "Hammer Head" as a superb example of the fibre glass boats and finaly in pride of place in the Jack Holt line up was the oldest registered Cadet still on the circuit - "Pintail".

I would like to thank Tim Gummer for all his hard work in organising such a great display. The White, Wilson and Hayward families for donating their boats for us to display. Finaly thanks to all those who gave up their precious time to come and help out on the stands especially Matt White and David Elliott. It was also great to see many of the Cadet Sailors showing off their boats and handing out lollies and leaflets!

Another Ex Cadet and well known coach Aaron Cooper in a bid for TV Stardom (sorry Aaron!)
Channel 4 programme featuring Aaron Cooper (Current National Squad Coach) and the selection process for the Artemis Acadamy. The Artemis Offshore Academy provides a UK training programme for British short-handed sailors, with the ultimate goal being to put a British sailor in a strong position to win the Vendée Globe in 2016 or 2020.

Highlight is when the candidates are asked to build and race a boat out of plywood and tape, Aaron builds a Cadet (well maybe?) and wins. Does he get selected? Watch the video (run time 23mins).

1st North Zone Squad Weekend - Parents Patrolled!!

Alton Water hosted the first RYA Cadet North Zone Squad Camp over the weekend 19th/20th November 2011. - "We were extremely fortunate to have Chris Videlo, very ably assisted by Hamish Stone, as coaches."

Sunny light airs (F2) and bright sunshine on Saturday and fog following which the wind picked up to F1 (just) with more warm bright sunshine on Sunday. The sailors rigged their own boats (they really did). Parents were under the strictest  of courteous instructions from Chris not to get involved. This led to parental itchy fingers and parents ratting on the ones who were helping, with taunts of "parent patrol"

"Actually, although we were not used to not helping, the new way worked well. - In our case, Alex and Richard discovered how to put 20 units of rig tension, on their own." With minimal help the sailors did it all.

Training was race-based and the sailors tacked and gybed on the whistle. After lunch they raced in a staggered start - 30 sec intervals. Everyone was off the water at 3.00 and away by 4.00. On Sunday, after rigging and jogging, the sailors had an extended session onshore in the fog on mast rake and an early lunch. After that there was a 3-race series, which Ed (Harris)and Lisa won, with Alex and Richard 2nd and Emily/Rebecca Mitchell 3rd.

"All in all it was a great weekend. The sailors worked as a team more than I have ever seen. They were keen and attentive. Parents all seemed to have a good time, with many going for an autumn walk round the lakeside. The litmus test for me was that it was a weekend of smiles all round."

Sunny Days - Winter Training

It's a glorious November day; the sun is low in the sky and streaming through the windows of Bowmoor Sailing Club in Gloucestershire where I'm sitting watching the Cadets on the water. It’s Remembrance Sunday - actually it's just after the 11th hour as I write this.

The eight Cadet boats making up this year’s Development Squad (DS) are out on the water with their coach Adam Bowers. Conditions are near perfect; a bright day with the wind out of the east-northeast at about 12mph – great for training. This is the first of five weekends between now and March when these boats will meet up at various sailing clubs around the country.

Last night many of the DS parents and children descended on the Cold Harbour restaurant attached to the nearby Premier Inn. Thanks to some rapid last minute re-organisation by Tim Gummer we ended up with a table of adults at one end of the restaurant and a table of 10+ children at the other end. Good conversation ensued, the food was decent and the beer flowed.

It's been an excellent couple of days - my son is learning a great deal. Part of the focus this weekend is on starts and the conditions have allowed them to practice numerous races. I asked Adam what he thought of the weekend, he said "Great weather, good learning and nice people", and I couldn't agree more.
Matthew and I will both arrive home this evening tired and hungry but will both be looking forward to our next outing in four weeks’ time.
