Dates and venues for 2018/19 season confirmed
Thanks for your patience whilst we finalise the calendar for 2018/19. We’re now able to confirm dates and venues with you.
Thanks to you all for the many responses we have had on the survey for Open Training. This has been really informative and has allowed us to design a season’s training that meets as many needs as possible.
We are delighted to announce that Alex Corby will be our lead coach for all four Open Training events. A former Cadet sailor, and podium place at the 2012 Worlds, Alex is a superb coach that many will know from former National Squad training and this year’s Frensham Open Training sessions. He will be putting together a comprehensive training programme, based on the input from the survey, which he will deliver over four sessions. A minimum number of boats will be required, but we anticipate take-up will be high, so don’t delay in booking via the website.
We have taken your feedback into account and have gone for a mixture of venues that provide locations that are central, in the east, and in the south. We have also gone for venues that provide a variety of conditions, to provide opportunities to build skills in conditions not always present at home clubs.
The venues and dates are:
- November 10/11 at Oxford (Farmoor)
- January 19/20 at Rutland
- March 9/10 at Itchenor
- March 30/31 at Stone
We have thought very carefully about whether to run training on Remembrance Sunday (11thNovember). Differing views exist. In the end, we have decided that we will run training (for all three groups) but will build in a specific period on Sunday morning to mark this occasion, which will include the period of silence at 11:00.
The class is also increasing its Regional Training opportunities. This will provide an easy next step from squadron training and ensure that our sailors are confident at racing and can enjoy competing in Open Meetings, Selector Competitions and National and International competitions. Many elements of Regional Training will specifically cater for those not in UKJS or National Squad and will be centered around our current squadron locations to minimise travel costs. Regional Training will have a variety of different formats to take local circumstances into account. Frensham Pond Sailing Club have run Training events in October for many years. This season we will be introducing some training events at Alton Water in December to provide a similar opportunity for East Coast sailors. Keep an eye out for the dates, format and coach for these events soon. Coaching provision for Regional Training events will be of a high standard and aimed at the needs of the sailors taking part. Dates will avoid Open Training events and be before the competitions in the spring and summer.
The three events that comprise the selector series will run as follows:
- 6/7 April, Stone Sailing Club
- 27/28 April, WPNSA
- 5/6 May, Grafham
The World Team will be announced at Grafham on 6 May. They will have a training session with their coach on 7 May (the Bank Holiday) and all parents (whether World Team or Promo fleet) who are planning to travel to Poland can use this time to get together and work out logistics for this.
The Nationals will be in Brixham from 17 – 23 August. Whilst we haven’t finalised the sailing calendar for this, we’re working around most holiday lets being Saturday to Saturday. We will probably have registration, measurement and a practice race on Sunday 18, and racing on Monday to Friday, with prizegiving on Friday evening. We’ve been reminded that GCSE exam results come out on Thursday 22nd, so are thinking about how to factor this in. Results being broadcast by flag signals is one option.
