Thorpe Bay Open Report 10th/11th July 2010 by Howard Warrington
We held our first open at Thorpe Bay for some years on 10th/11th July 2010. We were very keen to see the event well supported as a new or “resurrected” fleet and demonstrate to TBYC what Cadet racing is all about and hopefully encourage more of our members to the fold.
Various clashes with other events and with some boats already on their way to Poland for the World Championships reduced the anticipated turn out we had hoped for but we still mustered 14 boats with 5 from Thorpe Bay and visitors from Stone, Fishers Green and Royal Burnham. So a very big thank you to all our visitors for supporting the event.
We also shared the Open Weekend with the Lark Fleet who were great fun to be with and very supportive of the Cadets. They asked for a Cadet V Lark Rounders match which was hugely popular and great fun in the last warmth of the beautiful Saturday that we had.
The event started with a freshening sea breeze that we often see at Thorpe Bay, which built from around 10 kts to 16 kts as the day progressed. Race 1 was won by GBR Team representatives; Max and Francesca Ingall from Fishers Green, sailing their reserve boat Chase the Ace. 2nd were Lucy and Lainey Terkelsen from Stone S C in 8571 Blu Calula. 3rd was Hattie Ayre and Johnny Van Ingen from Stone in 8420 Tantrum. Race 2 saw Max and Francesca taking the bullet again but this time Alex and Lucy Corby also from Fishers Green in 9000 White Stuff taking 2nd and Thorpe Bay’s Alex Warrington and Teddy Elmore in 9636 Trigger’s Broom in 3rd. In the final race of the day the first 2 places remained the same with Hattie and Johnny coming home in 3rd.
Day 2 dawned with a 16 kt South Westerly which looked set for the day. Racing got underway with a long beat towards the famous Southend Pier head. Again the Fishers Green boats of Ingall and Corby held their momentum with another one, two, with the Terkelsen sisters fighting their way into 3rd place. Race 5 saw our great breeze die away for a time but the “Fishers Green 4” maintained their rankings but with home boys George and Ben Warrington in 9029 Freestyle, playing a safe “up-the-middle” last beat, managed to snatch 3rd place. Thankfully the breeze returned to its former glory so the final race started with Alex Warrington and Teddy Elmore, putting in a port flier, took an early lead but being hounded down by Alex and Lucy Corby, who caught them on the 2nd beat and ruining the Ingall duo’s clean sweep who then took 2nd place on the last few tacks to the finish.
Final Standings and prizes went to: 1st 8855 Max and Francesca Ingall – Fishers Green SC 2nd 9000 Alex and Lucy Corby – Fishers Green SC / King George SC 3rd 8571 Lucy and Lainey Terkelsen – Stone SC 4th 8420 Hattie Ayre and Jonathan Van Ingen – Stone SC 2010 Parkstone Open 10th/11th July 2010
20 travellers from Draycote Water, Exe, Frensham Pond, Royal Lymington, Royal Torbay, Salcombe and South Cerney joined eight local teams at this year’s Parkstone Open. Traditionally a September meeting, but moved to accommodate the RYA National Junior Squad qualifier event, entries were affected because a number of boats were already on their way to Poland for this year’s World Championships. Racing took place in the “top triangle” of Poole Harbour using a triangle-sausage-sausage course. Photographs of the event taken by Milke Millard can be found here and by Dave Harding here.
A F2 gusting F3 shifty south-westerly prevailed throughout Saturday. Race 1 started at the second attempt under a Black Flag . Charlie Whyte & Isobel Spiers from Frensham Pond in 8333 Sizzerin’ Hot caught the Race Officer’s eye with a superbly timed port-end flier which saw them 3rd at the windward mark behind fellow Frensham Pond sailors Matthew & Ben Shorrock in 8352 Master Mariner and Parkstone’s Matthew Currell & Theo Smith in 8997 Executrix. Matt & Theo took the lead on the run to the leeward mark and held off the challenge of Royal Lymington/Frensham Pond’s Andrew Smith & Rory Burdock in 9243 Blue String Pudding to take the gun. Amir & Aliya Jannaty from South Cerney were third in 9319, followed home by Michael Horne & Ollie King in 9013 Purple Ronnie from Frensham Pond, Ole Alcock & Guy Pullen from Parkstone in 9031 C’est La Vie and Will Reid & Daniel Stacey also from Parkstone in 9576 In Too Deep.
Race 2 saw Amir & Aliya open up a useful lead over Royal Torbay’s Alice Rumbelow & Jemima Crossland in 7632 Black Mariah, which they maintained for the first lap. The second beat saw Andrew & Rory move up into second, followed by Frensham Pond’s Ben Hazeldine & George Bridge in 8364 Fluke and Royal Lymington’s James & Henry Marsh in 9240 Nitro. Andrew & Rory went one further to take victory from Amir & Aliya with Alice & Jemima recovering well to take third.
The ebbing tide featured strongly in Race 3. Martha Haslam & Aqil Jannaty from South Cerney in 8291 Aslan led at the windward from James & Henry, Andrew & Rory and Mary Henderson & Jim Brooker from Salcombe/Frensham Pond in 8371 White Spirit. Mary & Jim led at the leeward and held off the challenge of Andrew & Rory to take the gun, with James & Henry third and Martha & Aqil fourth.
Fickle, shifty winds, when combined with the tide, produced challenging conditions for Sunday’s races. Matthew & Ben Shorrock took victory in Race 4 from Mary & Jim, Michael & Ollie and Matt & Theo. Race 5 saw Matt & Theo take their second bullet, with Mary & Jim again second and Andrew & Rory third. Going into the final race, Andrew & Rory held a five point lead over Matt & Theo, who were in turn one point ahead of Mary & Jim. Andrew & Rory opened up a useful gap over the fleet which they extended as the race progressed to score their second bullet, followed home by Mary & Jim and Matt & Theo.

All six GBR boats finished in the top 11 in a strong field that included most of the Belgian and Dutch world team boats due to compete in Poland at the end of July, making this a very successful event.
Tuesday's winds were light and shifty with a strengthening tidal stream, and after more than seven hours on the water the three scheduled Cadet races were run. There was a lengthy delay between the first and second race as the start line was reset (the Cadets also had to wait for Optimists to start, and they had a number of recalls). Nonetheless it was an excellent day for GBR boats with a first place for Henry Mills & Robert Keen in GBR 8845 and third for Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne sailing GBR 7274 in Race 8, a third place for Oliver & William Palierakis in 9005 in Race 9 and a first for Caroline & Jacob and third for Henry & Robert in Race 10.
With just one race scheduled to complete the series, Wednesday began like the two previous days with a light wind of 4-6 knots and an overcast sky. With both the wind and tide pushing the fleet back from the start line, there was a report from the Optimist fleet of a heavy bias to the right, clearly something the Cadets had noticed when they all lined up at the committee boat end. However in a skilful move Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick (GBR 9635) and a single Belgian boat rounded the committee boat before the gun and slipped back over the line to a flying start – ‘great move Louise’, said coach Adam Bowers from our watching rib. Soon BEL 8334 took a commanding lead and rounded the windward mark first, with all GBR boats in the top 11, led by Abigail Croft & Alex Page in 8363 third. By the second mark BEL 9739 had staged a remarkably comeback to take second place, with Caroline & Jacob in fourth, Abigail & Alex in fifth and Oliver & William in eighth. However, leg of the day went to Louise & Aaron who carved through the fleet between marks two and three, overtaking at least seven boats. The final beat to the finish was both long and difficult with shifting wind and an erratic tidal flow. Most of the Belgian boats took the left side, sailing close to the beach at times while most GBR boats sailed straight for the line. This paid dividends for Caroline & Jacob, who finished fourth, followed by Abigail & Alex in fifth.
Top six places;
1st BEL 8909 Toon de Munck & Eline Spitteals 19pts 2nd BEL 9739 Tom Alleman & Joke Lakiere 24pts 3rd NED 8334 Lotte Wijnbergh & Huug Wischut 32pts 4th GBR 7272 Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne 33pts 5th GBR 8363 Abigail Croft & Alex Page 38pts 6th GBR 8845 Henry Mills & Robert Keen 45pts
Other GBR places: 9th GBR 9005 Oliver & William Palierakis 80pts, 10th GBR 8910 Joseph Butterworth & Arthur Brown 80pts, 11th GBR 9635 Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick 82pts. Flanders Regatta 2010 Day Three by Gerard Payne
Day three started off unexpectedly overcast. The tide was nearing its lowest point prior to race one and ready to turn, and the stream would certainly affect the strategy of the GBR sailors. The first race started with a surprise OCS for overnight leaders BEL 9379 Tom Alleman & Joke Lakiere. BEL 8909 Toon de Munck & Eline Spitteals made the windward mark followed by Henry Mills & Robert Keen in GBR 8845 and Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick in GBR 9635. Abigail Croft & Alex Page in GBR 8363 were seventh with Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne in GBR 7274 one place behind. Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown in 8910 were 13th and Oliver & William Palierakis 18th. By the third mark, NED 8334 Lotte Wijnbergh & Huug Wilschut had taken the lead with Tom & Joke staging a remarkable comeback to finish a very respectable fourth. Henry & Robert sailed a good tactical race to come in ahead of them in third, Caroline & Jacob followed in sixth, Abigail & Alex seventh and Louise & Aaron eighth.
The second race started with the tide now turned, and this was to play a critical role, though the full effects of the strong current had yet to be felt. Caroline & Jacob had an outstanding race to finish second. The third race was a classic wind against tide, which created a minor chop. Approaching the finish line the two leading Belgian boats favoured the left side, which proved a winning decision, with a bunch of GBR boats staging a minor battle in the centre. However Caroline & Jacob took a line far on the right which, following a wind shift, paid off, and they finished third, followed by Henry & Robert in fourth and Louise & Aaron in fifth.
Leaders after seven races, with one discard 1st BEL 8909 Toon de Munck & Eline Spitteals 10pts 2nd BEL 9739 Tom Alleman & Joke Lakiere 14pts 3rd NED 8334 Lotte Wijnbergh & Huug Wilschut 27pts
GBR positions: 4th Abigail Croft & Alex Page 29pts; 5th Henry Mills & Robert Keen 29pts; 6th Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne 31pts; 8th Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick 54pts; 12th Joseph Butterworth & Arthur Brown 62pts; 14th Oliver and William Palierakis 68pts.

Flanders Regatta 2010 Day Two by Ian Latham
The first full day of sailing began with sunny skies, slight winds, moderate waves and a tide running against the wind. By the third race, the wind and tide had strengthened very significantly and the waves memorable - exactly the conditions that attract GBR Cadets to Flanders Regatta.
All the GBR boats started well in the first race, spread across the course, with Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne in 7274 setting off left and Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown in 8910, right. But as in Saturday's race it was local sailors Tom Alleman & Joke Lakiere in BEL 9739 who rounded the windward mark first with Abigail Croft & Alex Page third in 8363. Most of the GBR boats found themselves in dirty air and fell back on the reach, allowing Belgian boats to come through, taking the first four places, with Henry Mills & Robert Keen in 8845 competing well to take sixth. The second race was against a stronger tide and complicated by significant shifts first to the left and then to the right on the first beat. GBR boats were beginning to contend with the conditions, with Oliver & William Palierakis in 9005 fourth around the windward mark and the rest around mid-fleet. Climbing through the field, Henry & Robert sailed brilliantly to take second, with Caroline & Jacob fourth. The strengthening winds in race three brought out the best in the GBR sailors, with all boats rounding the first mark in the top ten places. Although Abi & Alex were in contention for line honours, in the end they couldn't make ground on the lead Netherlands boat, but stormed through in second, wiith Caroline & Jacob third, just ahead of Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick in fifth. Henry & Robert were seventh, Joe & Arthur ninth and Oliver & William 10th.

Flanders Regatta 2010 Day One by Peter Mills Six GBR Cadets are participating in the 2010 Flanders Regatta, highlight of the Belgian youth sailing calendar, against sailors from the Netherlands and the host country. Following the morning's opening ceremony, RYA National Cadet Class coach Adam Bowers towed the boats along the Nieuwpoort channel out to sea for the scheduled 3pm start. The torrential overnight rain had fortunately passed and cooler, calmer conditions were expected. The onshore breeze of about 10 knots died as the boats reached the start area, but some 30 minutes later the wind picked up with some rain in tow and the race started. Tom Allemen & Joke Lakiere sailing BEL 9739 took a pin-end flier and led from start to finish. Abigail Croft & Alex Page in 8363 were third at the windward, followed by Henry Mills & Robert Keen in 8845, Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne in 7274 and Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown in 8910. By the finish line all GBR boats were in the top 13 in the field of 23: Placings after 1 race 1st BEL 9739 Tom Alleman & Joke Lakiere 2nd GBR 8363 Abigail Croft & Alex Page 3rd NED 8334 Lottie Wijnbergh & Huug Wilschut Other GBR: 5th 8910 Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown; 7th 8845 Henry Mills & Robert Keen; 10th 9635 Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick; 12th 7274 Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne; 13th 9005 Oliver & William Palierakis.
July Preview July is the month when school holidays in the UK and mainland Europe coincide, providing opportunities for international competition. The principal event is the World Championships in Puck, Poland from 22nd to 31st July 2010. 75 teams have entered from Australia, Argentina, Belarus, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Russia, the Ukraine, the UK and the host country. A further 69 teams have entered the Promotional Regatta which runs over the same period. The Flanders Youth Regatta is already underway, which its multi-class entries. Six GBR teams have travelled the short distance to the Belgian coast where they will join 19 entries from Belgium and the Netherlands. The GBR entries include World Team members Abigail Croft & Alex Page, Louise Latham & Aaron Chadwick, Henry Mills & Robert Keen and Oliver & William Palierakis, together with Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne and Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown. Adam Bowers, RYA National Cadet Coach will be providing training and the competitors are grateful to the RYA for their support. Tough competition is expected over the five days of racing. Six teams from the Belgian entry for this year’s Worlds have entered, together with three members of the Dutch team. Mid-month sees two Open Meetings. The Parkstone Open is traditionally held in September, but has been moved to the weekend of the 10th/11th July because of a clash with Zone Squad selection events. Parkstone is traditionally a popular event on the Cadet circuit and this year forms the fifth round of the inaugural Southern Traveller Series, which comprises meetings at two inland and four coastal clubs. The same weekend formally marks the return of the Cadet Class to Thorpe Bay Yacht Club after a gap of many years. Six races are scheduled over the two days of the Open Meeting. This event forms the third round of the Mailspeed Marine Eastern Area Series, the other meetings being Corinthian Otters, Waldringfield, Stone and Fishers Green.
World Team at Grafham by Ian & Louise Latham ‘We’ve been concentrating on the big picture - getting both the helms and crews to get their heads out of the boats’, says the RYA’s Cadet world team coach Adam Bowers. After two weekends of intense training at Grafham, the 2010 squad came off the just water in time to watch the England football team crack under German pressure - ‘learning to cope with stressful situations is so important for sailors at this level too’, says Bowers. ‘Our focus at Grafham has been on getting the basic processes in place so we can grasp the opportunities to achieve the best possible outcome. The weather here has been shifty and unsettled, and we’ve put a lot of work into understanding the mechanisms of shift, as well as creative starting and recognising clean air’, says Bowers. Indeed some dramatic wind shifts over the four days of training showed the sailors how important it is not to over-commit, when shifts in the practice races led to a complete reversal of positions in a single leg. The Cadet squad that will represent GBR in July's World Championships at Puck in Poland comprises seven boats: Katie Barr and Scarlett Anderson, Ben Binmore and Martha Jones, Abigail Croft and Alex Page, Max and Francesca Ingall, Louise Latham and Aaron Chadwick, Henry Mills and Robert Keen, Oliver and William Palierakis, and reserves Andrew Smith and Jack Collings. The team was chosen following their results at testing indicators at Rutland, Torbay and Weymouth. Behind the scenes parents, coordinated by Peter Mills, have been busy planning the team back-up, from RIB support to kit, with a plethora of emails filling inboxes in the great shorts debate. In Poland, the team will face competition from entries from Argentina and Australia as well as countries closer to home including Belgium, Belarus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Russia and the host country. In addition to the world team, over 20 GBR boats are expected to participate in the Promotional event. ‘We’re keeping an open mind in terms of the conditions we expect in Poland’, says Bowers. ‘We know there’s no current and the waters are shallow and therefore choppy, and there’s low-lying land all around so it’s likely to be shifty. We’ll be sailing to make the best of opportunities.’ Waldringfield Open Meeting sponsored by Anglia Factors - Day 2 Competitors arrived for the second day of the Cadet Open at Waldringfield sponsored by Anglia Factors to find little wind on the River Deben. Frustratingly, the morning’s racing was lost when 30 minutes into Race 5, the entire fleet passed the wrong side of a mark and the N flag was raised. Lunch was taken early and advantage was taken of high water to set a rectangular course around the island in front of the clubhouse. In the re-sailed Race 5 and following a long beat to windward, Waldringfield sisters Emma & Lulu Knott sailing 8432 Trident rounded the mark in first place from Stone’s Lucy & Lainey Terkelsen in 8571 Blu Calula, with Waldringfield’s Charlie Linsell & Alex Eaton third in 8421 State Of The Art. Emma & Joshua White, again from Waldringfield were fourth in 8414 Kiss, followed by overnight leaders Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown from Fishers Green in 8910 Natural Mystique. Light winds over an ebbing tide produced few opportunities and the race finished after one circuit with the top five unchanged. Going into the final race, Emma & Lulu led Joe & Arthur by two points. The Race Officer again set a rectangular course, but with the addition of a final beat to the finish. Charlie & Alex led at the windward from Annabel Fox & Ellie Walton from Draycote Water sailing 7658 Leviathan with Thorpe Bay’s George & Ben Warrington third in 9029 Freestyle. Emma & Lulu held fifth place, three places ahead of Joe & Arthur. The lead changed hands down the run, with George & Ben heading Annabel & Ellie, with Charlie & Alex back in third and with a useful gap over the following fleet. The lead changed again on the short reach to the leeward mark and Annabel & Ellie took line honours by a safe margin from George & Ben with Charlie & Alex third. Joe & Arthur had made up good ground on Emma & Lulu and by the start of the beat were one place ahead in fourth. However, Emma & Lulu maintained close contact on the final leg to finish one place behind them in fifth. Cadet Squadron Captain Geoff Harris thanked the Race Officer, Anglia Factors for their sponsorship and all those who had helped with staging the event, which had been preceded by three days of training. Waldringfield Vice-Commodore and former International Cadet Class Chairman,William Suddell presented the following trophies on behalf of the Club: The Harris Salver for winning the Open Meeting and The Club Tankard for Best Female Helm to Emma & Lulu Knott (8432 Trident) The Mason Trophy for first U15 to Emma White & Joshua White (8414 Kiss) The Lookers Trophy for first U14 and the trophy for the Most Improvement since last year to Charlie Linsell & Alex Eaton (8421 State Of The Art) The Open Trophy for first U13 to Lucy Terkelsen & Lainey Terkelsen (8571 Blu Calula) Click here for the results
Waldringfield Open Meeting - Day 1
30 teams have entered this year’s Waldringfield Open, with visitors from Draycote Water, Fishers Green, Stone and Thorpe Bay joining 20 local boats on the delightful River Deben. Six races are scheduled over the two days with a discard cutting in with the fourth race. Four races were held on the first day on the stretch of water immediately downstream of the clubhouse. The fleet launched two hours before high water into a F3 easterly. Race 1 saw Fishers Green pairing Joe Butterworth & Arthur Brown sailing 8910 Natural Mystique first at the windward ahead of local teams Emma & Lulu Knott in 8432 Trident and Mark Yale & Theo Passmore in 9292 I’m A Bullet Too, with Thorpe Bay’s Alex Warrington & Laura Lloyd in 9636 Triggers Broom, fourth. The leaders opened up a useful margin over the rest of the fleet with Mark & Theo briefly leading mid-race before surrendering it to Joe & Arthur, who held off a late challenge from Emma & Lulu to take line honours. Mark & Theo were third, with Waldringfield pairing Faye Gosling & Elsa Cooney in 9041 Cool Runnings fourth, having made their way up the fleet from 12th place. Race 2 was dominated by local team Charlie Linsell & Alex Eaton sailing 8421 State Of The Art. Their extensive lead from the first beat was almost worn away by Joe & Arthur, who made up five places to finish second. George & Ben Warrington from Thorpe Bay sailing 9029 Freestyle were third, with Faye & Elsa notching up another fourth place. Two further races followed lunch. The wind was gusting to F4 as the third race got underway and the tide had turned. As the race developed, Alex & Laura, Lucy & Lainey Terkelsen from Stone in 8571 Blu Calula, Joe & Arthur, Emma & Lulu and Hattie Ayre & Jonathan Van Ingen , also from Stone in 8420 Tantrum broke away from the main body of the fleet. A close battle ensued between the leaders with Lucy & Lainey taking first place by a close margin from Alex & Laura, with Emma & Lulu third and Joe & Arthur fourth. With the river ebbing away, the Race Officer made the maximum possible use of the available water by moving the Committee Boat further downstream. Joe & Arthur lead at the end of the first lap from Waldringfield’s Emma & Joshua White in 8414 Kiss, with Emma & Lulu and Hattie & Jonathan third and fourth respectively. Emma & Lulu made their move on the next beat to take the lead, which they maintained to the finish for their first victory of the day. Joe & Arthur took second, Emma & Joshua, third and Lucy & Lainey, fourth. Saturday's briefing is at 10am. Exe Open Meeting 19th/20th June 2010 A close fought battle between members of this year’s RYA National Junior Squad and RYA South/South-West Zone Squad kept the outcome of this year’s Exe Open Meeting in the balance right up to the final race. Entries from Parkstone, South Cerney and Royal Torbay joined local crews for a two-day meeting. Six races were scheduled in the mouth of the River Exe using a triangle-sausage-triangle course with a discard kicking in with Race 4. Saturday’s three races were sailed on an ebbing tide with light, shifty winds presenting opportunities for the vigilant. In Race 1, Matt Currell & Theo Smith from Parkstone sailing 8997 Executrix led at the windward mark from Royal Torbay’s Ben Binmore & Martha Jones in 8440 Black Otter and Exe pairing Katie Kinver & Gina Hearth in 8408 Inspiration. Ben & Martha took the lead on the next leg and held on for victory. Matt & Theo were second, with Amir & Aliya Jannaty from South Cerney sailing 9319, third. Race Two again saw Ben & Martha battling it out with Matt & Theo, but a capsize left the former with too much to do in the closing stages. Matt & Theo took line honours, with Ben & Martha second and local brothers James & Chris Turl third in 7627 Vanguard. The third race went to Ben & Martha, with Matt & Theo second and Alice Rumbelow & Jemima Crossland from Royal Torbay third in 7632 Black Mariah. Sunday’s racing started two hours before high water with crews making their way to the racing area with the benefit of wind off the land and in anticipation of a sea breeze around midday. This all transpired in Race 4 when a significant windshift halfway through the race turned the course upside-down. Matt & Theo made the best of the challenge to win from Ben & Martha with Amir & Aliya third. Alice & Jemima, Amir & Aliya and Matt & Theo all led at some stage during the first triangle of Race 5. By the third windward, Matt & Theo led from James & Chris and Alice & Jemima and these positions were unchanged at the finish. Going into the final race, RYA South/South-West Zone Squad members Matt & Theo led by one point from RYA National Junior Squad members Ben & Martha. Matt & Theo led at the end of the first triangle. Up the second beat Ben & Martha went left and Matt & Theo went right, but to no avail. Matt & Theo were still ahead and extended their lead as the race progressed, with Ben & Martha second and James & Chris third. Matt & Theo achieved their first victory in an Open Meeting counting four bullets and a second. Ben & Martha were worthy runners-up with two victories and three seconds. The Exe Open counts as the fourth round of the Southern Traveller Series. Frensham Pond sailors Michael Horne & Ben Crane/Ollie King currently lead from South Cerney’s Amir & Aliya Jannaty. Otters Open 19th June 2010 by Kay Tavinor
When scheduling an open meeting in June, you expect to be hosting a beautiful balmy sail on the Crouch. NOT TRUE!. The 19th June was grey and blustery with black clouds building passing through with big rainy squalls, with the wind shifting in as the rainstorms passed through and providing some very challenging conditions. The 17 boats showed that most Cadet sailors are truly fearless and it was a great sight to see most spinnakers coming out of the bag on the downwind legs providing fast and exciting reaches (and a few capsizes too). Although the conditions were not ideal there were mostly huge smiles on the competitors faces. 4 races were completed with the front few places being hotly contested. Finlay Cullender and Harvey Turner were commended for their fighting spirit despite a number of mishaps they ventured on. However, the consistency of Alex and Lucy Corby meant that they won the event by 1 point from Katie Barr and Scarlett Anderson who also won the first girl and first Otter trophy. Molly Brown and Sasha Musto, who, despite winning 2 races, managed a third place overall one point behind Katie. As well as the very valuable 1930s silver art deco overall first prize trophy, Alex Corby also won the first under 15s helm. Visitors included boats from Fishers Green, Frensham Pond, Royal Burnham, Stone and Thorpe Bay.

South Cerney Open Meeting 12th/13th June 2010
Twenty Cadets entered South Cerney’s Open Meeting. Five races were scheduled over two days with a discard kicking in with the fifth race. Eleven visitors from Exe, Frensham Pond, Royal Lymington and Royal Torbay joined nine local crews with final placings counting towards both the Southern Traveller Series and the Ian Craig Trophy. Three races were completed on Saturday in a shifty breeze which weakened into the afternoon. Race 1 saw Frensham Pond boats finish first and third, split by sailors from Exe. Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne sailing 7274 Wave Rider took the honours from James & Chris Turl in 7627 Vanguard with Matthew & Ben Shorrock third in 8252 Master Mariner. Two further races followed lunch with victory going to South Cerney boats. Martha Haslam & Katie Ainsworth sailing 8291 Aslan led the fleet home in Race 2 from Frensham Pond sailors Michael Horne & Ben Crane in 9013 Purple Ronnie with Matthew & Ben notching up another third place. Race 3 was won by Rhos Hawes & Lewis Lane in 6977 Izzy Fast. Second place went to James & Henry Marsh from Royal Lymington in 9240 Nitro with Caroline & Jacob third. Crews awoke on Sunday morning to still airs. Fortunately a breeze filled in by the scheduled start at 10am and steadily strengthened throughout the morning. Overnight leaders Caroline Croft & Jacob Payne consolidated their lead winning Race 4 by a good margin from James & Chris Turl with James & Henry Marsh third. With the trophy secure, Caroline & Jacob went on to take Race 5 from James & Henry with local team Amir Jannaty & Will McMahon third in 9319. Counting three firsts and a third, Caroline & Jacob were worthy winners by six points from James & Henry, with Rhos & Lewis a further six points behind on 18. UKNCCA Southern Traveller Series 2010 Chris Green, Apr 10
We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new regional event. The Southern Traveller Series comprises six Open Meetings including two lakes and four coastal venues. The aim of the Series is to encourage sailors to gain experience by attending different Open Meetings. These will be smaller (and possibly less formal) then Indicators and provide useful experience away from their “home” clubs. The Series comprises the Opens at Frensham Pond, Royal Torbay, South Cerney, Exe, Parkstone and Royal Lymington, with the best results from four events to count. Please click here for the Notice of Series.
