Corinthian Otters Cadet Squadron Updates

March 2023

Corinthian Otters go inland each Saturday in March. We have organised training at Fishers Green. It is, without a doubt, a fantastic venue and so welcoming to all. We have fourteen boats out on the water: two lead coaches, two ex-cadet trainers helping, and a bunch of enthusiastic parents. Cadets from Corinthian Otters, Fishers Green and Rickmansworth SC. Our first Saturday was cold, but lots of on-shore stuff rigging boats and sail trim before lunch. In the afternoon, the session of Tacking Gybing, get your boat to the island first picture. This is learning to sail the fun way. End of the day lots of happy children and parents.

Second Saturday, it was colder than the first week lots of covers with ice pockets, so parental help to speed up rigging and get back in the warmth of the clubhouse before the morning training session. The session was a Fortnite on the water game, so all the cadets knew what to do. A brilliant session followed, and we returned for a welcoming hot lunch. A time for helms and crews to ask questions about each other to get to know one other better.

The afternoon sun was good for starting practice up to a windward mark and back to the line. There were many exciting starts and lots to learn, but the fleet is improving. I am delighted with the progress of many of our cadets.

They learn fast and have greater confidence to sail amongst the other boats.
